Preparation

Included here are word lists provided by Scripps to assist your child in preparing for the bee.  2019 Complete List with Definitions contains all the preparation words provided by Scripps.  Word definitions are included to aid your child in their preparation; students will not be tested on the meanings of words, only the spelling.

The second document is another resource from Scripps: the 2019 Great Words, Great Works reading list. All of the words from the 2019 School Spelling Bee Study List can be found in engaging, grade-appropriate books, allowing your students to get to know these words in the context of great stories!

What to Expect

Our bee will be comprised of two rounds:  preliminary and final.  During the preliminary round students will complete a written spelling test comprised of 20-30 words taken from the 2019 Complete List.

1st-3rd grade students will all be given the same written test.  The preliminary round will be words from the first, second and third grade lists with some words from higher grade levels given at the end.  The 4th-5th grade preliminary will work the same way (students will take a test comprised of mostly 4th-5th grade words with a few from higher grade levels at the end).

The top 5 students in each grade will move on to the Final Round which is an oral spelling bee.

Event Dates

Exact event dates are still being determined.  Preliminary rounds will take place in January 2019 and the final round in early February.

The Spiritridge Spelling Bee winner will advance to the Regional Finals in Seattle in March.  Make your dreams of competing in this high-profile academic event come true and start preparing for the Bee today!
